DEPARTMENT
Site Geleen
The Site Geleen encompasses 2 Naphtha crackers, a Logistics department comprising tank farms, inland harbor and rail terminal, a Polypropylene unit, 2 Polyethylene units and a Product Handling department. The Naphtha crackers produce amongst others ethylene and propylene which are mainly used as feedstock for the successive poly-olefins plants. Our polyethylene product range includes all of the commodity thermoplastic polymers, linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE), low density polyethylene (LDPE), and high density polyethylene (HDPE). The polypropylene product range includes block copolymer and specialty automotive grades.

Structure Site Geleen
We have operational units which are based on the PMT-model (Plant Operations, Maintenance and Technical). Plant Operations is responsible for a safe and reliable production within the defined Safety Health & Environment / License to Operate window. Maintenance is responsible for specification, scheduling and execution of the maintenance activities in the plant. The Technical department is responsible for e.g. the design of the asset, the asset life plan, the operating window, continuous reviewing of the asset performance and the subsequent feedback to Operations and Maintenance. Within Technical, the Asset Engineering Department consists of 5 teams: Static, Rotating, Instrumentation, Electrical and Asset Performance. These discipline-based teams cover all assets on the Geleen site.

JOB PURPOSE & RESPONSIBILITIES
Introduction of the project
SABIC Geleen operates approx. 3000 pressure relief valves (PRV’s) in the petrochemicals plants at Geleen. These PRV’s are the last line of defense to prevent overpressure in the process, which can lead to failure of equipment. All PRV’s are overhauled every 4-6 years, depending on i.a. failure mechanisms and fouling history. Most of the PRV’s are installed without back up. This means as soon as there is an issue with a PRV, the plant has to shut down. Since the plants become older, it becomes harder and harder to have spare parts available.
This internship’s goal is to revise the current maintenance policy of PRV’s in light of the industry wide issue of ‘Aging Assets’.

Description of the main tasks, most important tasks on top.
In order to secure the reliability of the plants for the upcoming years, a new maintenance philosophy for PRV’s has to be set up. This maintenance philosophy needs to incorporate the criticality of the PRV in the process, the number of identical PRV’s in the plant, maintenance history of the PRV, vendor input, experience of the contractor overhauling the PRD’s etc.
To get familiar with the overhaul of PRV’s, we expect the candidate to participate several times in the overhaul process at the local contractor, discuss the issues with vendors, maintenance managers etc. Apart from this, we expect the candidates support in smaller maintenance issues with pressure vessels/piping etc. in order to get acquainted with a chemical plant, how maintenance of a chemical plant is organized, how spare parts are bought and stored and the tasks / responsibilities of a mechanical engineer in this process.

Expected duration / period, +/- 6 months
